‘Enjoy your sleep while you can’

The first piece of advice that parents say to those who will soon be first-time parents is “enjoy your sleep while you can”. I understand that that is probably good advice, and you won’t get much sleep as a new parent, but, is that a bad thing?

Having a baby is one one the biggest and most beautiful blessings in life. I’d much rather experience precious time with my baby than to sleep any day.

I think the saying “enjoy your sleep while you can” can go towards anything that you are truly passionate about and care about. When you really care about something (or someone), sleep should be the least of importance. When you’re expecting a baby, you enjoy your sleep until your baby comes. After that, parenthood really kicks in, and there are things that need to be done with your baby that are more valuable than sleeping.

If you have big goals and aspirations in life, but you’re still enjoying your sleep a little too much, maybe you haven’t really started to pursue that goal of yours yet. The same way I can still enjoy my sleep right now because my baby hasn’t been born yet.

Nothing comes to sleepers but a dream. Wake up and follow your dreams. It’s possible.

You never know who’s watching

You never know who is paying attention to your moves. You never know who is out there supporting you. You never know who looks up to you.

Make sure you are living your truth, but also make sure to be a good person in general. There are a lot of people who I’ve watched and looked up to over the years who don’t even know it. I might have began to watch them from a football player standpoint, but now I watch them as a man, husband and father. Their actions still have an influence on my life. No matter who who are, there is always someone watching. Rather it’s your parents, kids, peers, random people, or just God.

Our actions speak much louder than our words. Treat everyone nicely, and whatever you do in life; never give up. There’s someone out there who will go through a similar situation who needs to see your hard work and perseverance in order for them to do the same one day.

How would you want to be viewed by others? What message would you like to give those who watch you? Be that person right now. Someone is watching already.

Run your race

Life is like running track. You might have the same goals and objectives as your competitors, but you have to run your own race.

A lot of times we like to compare ourselves to the competition, or to our peers. In track, you’re taught to never look at your opponents while racing. Something as small as a head turn can slow you down and even cost you the race. In life, it can be counterproductive to worry too much about what other are doing or where they are in life. It’s best to focus on yourself because no one can run your race but you, and everyone is focused on their own race.

There are also times in races when one individual looks as if they are ahead of others, but as the race progresses, you realize that they are actually behind the competition. Everyone runs the same distance in track, but they are all staggered on the track depending on what lane they are in. Same goes for life. The only difference is in life, you’re your only competition. There’s no need to worry how far head or behind someone is because they might have a different finish line than you.

Just like track, you decide in life how well you do. It’s the practice and work that you put in, and the life choices that you make that matters most. We can all win though, so run your race, and finish.

What if…?

No room for “what if”s in life. Make sure you you follow through with all ideas. Make sure you pursue what makes you happy. Give all you got in whatever you do and leave the rest to God. When it’s all said and done, you won’t have to ask “what if?”.

All the choices that we make have consequences. Make sure you make the decisions in life in order to not ask “what if” in regret.

I ask myself “what if” at times though. I ask “what if I would have quit too early, would if I would have gave up too soon?”. That’s a “what if” that I am fine with never knowing.

A clean slate

I look at every day as a clean slate do the things I intended on doing the day before, but didn’t. A clean slate to go workout or start that diet that I’ve been meaning to start. A clean slate to head in the direction towards my goals.

I’ve learned not to be so hard on myself about the daily goals and tasks that I do not accomplish, but also make sure I do not get complacent and accept the feeling of failure. Every day will not go as planned, but you have to have the mindset and optimism that today can be as productive as needed. We can’t control a lot of things in life. We can control our attitude and effort though. You might not do something that you intended on doing today, and you might have a good reason why you didn’t do it. Just make sure to do it tomorrow.

All you need is one good and productive day to get things rolling. You just need one day to start practicing those good habits. After that, you build on that day and continue to get better and practice those good habits. If you slip up and have a bad day, that’s ok. You’ll have a clean slate tomorrow. Just try strive to get better daily and do a little more than you did yesterday.

When the student is ready, the teacher will appear

When you’re really serious about pursuing and learning something in life, the answers will reveal themselves. You will meet the people you need to meet to get to your destination. You will learn things you need to learn in order to reach your destination.

But how do you know when you’re really “ready” for something? I think your actions will reflect that you’re ready. A lot of people say what they desire or what they are going to do, but their actions don’t reflect that. That’s why the teacher hasn’t appeared to them yet.

You have to be careful though, because we often want the wrong things in life, and the teacher that appears is really the devil. God will instruct you and teach you the right way. – Isaiah 28:26

Life is like solving a Rubik’s Cube

I used to think that I would never be able to solve a Rubik’s Cube. I’ve tried at random times throughout my life and could never figure it out. Then I watched a simple 10 minute video on YouTube and can now solve a Rubik’s Cube in three minutes or less. That might be slow for others, but that’s fast for me!

There might be times in life when you feel like you can’t solve whatever problem or challenge that you are faced with. The answer is out there, you just have to find it. There’s even a good chance that the answer is on YouTube LOL.

What I liked about the guy on YouTube who taught me how to solve a Rubik’s Cube is that there are steps you can follow that guarantees you’ll solve the cube. There are also solutions for every problem you’ll be faced with when solving the cube. I think life is the same way.

There are actions we can take that can put us on the path to success. There are also other actions we can take when we are faced with a problem. You have to believe that you can succeed, and you have to be willing to do what it takes to discover the keys to success. You have to have a plan to follow in order to succeed. If not, you’ll be like me before I learned how to solve the Rubik’s Cube; you’ll just be making random moves with no strategy, hoping to solve the puzzle.

It’s possible to solve a Rubik’s Cube and it’s possible to overcome whatever obstacle you encounter in life. Seek the answers to be able to solve all the twist and turns in your life. It’s possible.

Honest Feedback

Accepting honest feedback is crucial for improvement. You should welcome it as much as possible. A lot of times people will have a different perspective than you or even have more experience or expertise in a particular field than you. You should want their honest feedback.

The key word in honest feedback is “honest”. The key component of honest feedback is trust. You have to trust that the person giving you feedback is being honest and that they have your best interest in mind. You have to also trust that this person knows what they are talking about. You have to trust yourself to make the appropriate changes once getting the feedback also.

The thing I like about golf is that it’s very technical. You have to do the right thing every time you hit the ball. A good thing about golf is that you can get instant feedback from your trainer or friends that you golf with. At times it feels like you’re doing everything right, then you hit the ball and it doesn’t go where you intended. When you have someone there to watch you swing, they can tell you what adjustments you need to make in order to improve on your next swing. Those who listen will improve as they go through the golf course. Those who don’t listen will continue to practice bad habits and not improve. The same goes for all sports. Dealing with honest feedback is key to being coachable in general. A lot of the time it’s the athlete who can handle feedback and make the adjustments who will be the best player.

You can’t take honest feedback personal, and you have to understand that there are others out there who might know more than you, or see something that you can’t see that needs to change. Embrace the feedback. The best thing you can say to honest feedback is “ thank you”. After that, incorporate the feedback and continue to move forward.

Never stop learning

No matter how old you are, you should never stop learning. The kids who read books and continue to learn during summer vacation will return to school more advanced than the kids who do not read or learn anything during their break.

I used to think that most of learning was associated with school, but I feel as if I have learned more after graduating college than what I did while in college.

It’s key to find out how you learn. Then you will be able to teach yourself things. Once you can do that, the sky is the limit. I’m at the point that if there’s anything that I want to know or learn, I can find a way to learn it. There is always something new you can learn that will help you in life. It might make you more valuable as an entrepreneur or employee, or make you a more wise and knowledgeable person overall.

I’ve now been out of school for five years. I can’t imagine not deliberately learning new things since then. A lot of things in life I’ve also had to relearn. I think it’s good to brush up on things that you we learned throughout your life. Never know when it will come in handy.

It’s never too late to learn new things. It’s never too late to go back to school either, if that’s what you feel would be most beneficial for you.

Make it an effort to learning new things everyday. It can change the trajectory of your entire life.

The early bird gets the worm

The saying “the early bird gets the worm” is a cliché nowadays, but it is the truth nonetheless. It is important to start something early to maximize the potential outcome.

Lately for me, I’ve realized that in order to achieve everything that I’d like to achieve in a single day, I have to wake up much earlier than I normally do. Something as simple as waking up two hours earlier than usual will give me the appropriate time to do all of my tasks in a timely and less stressful manner.

As I think about my life, most of my success has come whenever I wake up early and chase my dreams. In high school I would have to wake up early and workout before school started. This helped me become a better athlete. I had to do the same in college. Whenever I’ve gone to church throughout my life, majority of the time I had to wake up early. This has made me a better man of God. If I’m up super early, I’m doing something productive.

We all have things that we’d like to do, but we always make the excuse of not having enough time. We also have a lot of great ideas and goals, but often we do not act on them as soon as we should. We should act on our ideas and goals as early as possible.

The competition is out there, and they want that worm just like you do. They might even be willing to be the early bird. I don’t know what your “worm” is in life, but make sure you’re the early bird to get that worm. If you arrive first, you have a better chance than those who arrive late. Go get it.
